Matérn-based nonstationary cross-covariance models for global processes

چکیده
Many spatial processes in environmental applications, such as climate variables and climate model errors on a global scale, exhibit complex nonstationary dependence structure, in not only their marginal covariance but also their cross-covariance. Flexible crosscovariance models for processes on a global scale are critical for an accurate description of each spatial process as well as the cross-dependences between them and also for improved predictions. We propose various ways to produce cross-covariance models, based on the Matérn covariance model class, that are suitable for describing prominent nonstationary characteristics of the global processes. In particular, we seek nonstationary versions ofMatérn covariancemodels whose smoothness parameters vary over space, coupledwith a differential operators approach for modeling large-scale nonstationarity. We compare their performance to the performance of some existing models in terms of the aic and spatial predictions in two applications: joint modeling of surface temperature and precipitation, and joint modeling of errors in climate model ensembles. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Nonstationary cross-covariance models for multivariate processes on a globe
In geophysical and environmental problems, it is common to have multiple variables of interest measured at the same location and time. These multiple variables typically have dependence over space (and/or time). As a consequence, there is a growing interest in developing models for multivariate spatial processes, in particular, the cross-covariance models. On the other hand, many data sets thes...
متن کاملSpatial Modelling Using a New Class of Nonstationary Covariance Functions.
We introduce a new class of nonstationary covariance functions for spatial modelling. Nonstationary covariance functions allow the model to adapt to spatial surfaces whose variability changes with location. The class includes a nonstationary version of the Matérn stationary covariance, in which the differentiability of the spatial surface is controlled by a parameter, freeing one from fixing th...
متن کاملCross-Covariance Functions for Multivariate Geostatistics
Continuously indexed datasets with multiple variables have become ubiquitous in the geophysical, ecological, environmental and climate sciences, and pose substantial analysis challenges to scientists and statisticians. For many years, scientists developed models that aimed at capturing the spatial behavior for an individual process; only within the last few decades has it become commonplace to ...
متن کاملNonstationary Multivariate Spatial Covariance Modeling
We derive a class of matrix valued covariance functions where the direct and crosscovariance functions are Matérn. The parameters of the Matérn class are allowed to vary with location, yielding local variances, local ranges, local geometric anisotropies and local smoothnesses. We discuss inclusion of a nonconstant cross-correlation coefficient and a valid approximation. Estimation utilizes kern...

Recent work in the areas of nonparametric regression and spatial smoothing has focused on modelling functions of inhomogeneous smoothness. In the regression literature, important progress has been made in fitting free-knot spline models in a Bayesian context, with knots automatically being placed more densely in regions of the covariate space in which the function varies more quickly. In the sp...
